Supreme State Prosecutor's Office

Supreme State Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Slovenia, led by the State Prosecutor General of the Republic of Slovenia, is organised into departments: Criminal Affairs Department, Civil and Administrative Affairs Department, Training and Supervision Department, Department for the Organisation and Development of Management and Centre of Expertise and IT.

Centre of Expertise and IT works as an internal organisational unit at the Supreme State Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Slovenia.

Supreme State Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Slovenia performs the functions of state prosecution before the Supreme Court of the Republic of Slovenia, and coordinating, supervisory and educational activities with respect to district state prosecutors' offices and the Specialised State Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Slovenia with a Department for the investigation and Prosecution of Official Persons Having Special Authorities.

Eleven district state prosecutors' offices perform the duties of the first instance authority. Local state prosecutors, district state prosecutors and senior state prosecutors are assigned to district state prosecutors' offices. Their area of ​​operation covers eleven district courts. State prosecutors from these district prosecutors' offices also appear before local courts in their territory. Some district prosecutors' offices have external departments as organisational units.

At district state prosecutors' offices at the headquarters of higher courts (Ljubljana, Maribor, Celje, Koper), sections are organised for the coordination and allocation of cases to be heard before higher courts (Complaint Section).

The most complex criminal acts, the prosecution of which requires special organisation and competences of state prosecutors and the highest levels of performance, are dealt with by the Specialised State Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Slovenia. At the Specialised State Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Slovenia, the Section for the Investigation and Prosecution of Official Persons Having Special Authority (Special Section) functions as an independent internal organisational unit with a special position.

In Slovenia, there are state prosecutors at four levels: local state prosecutors, district state prosecutors, senior state prosecutors and supreme state prosecutors.

State prosecutors with the position of at least a local state prosecutor appear before local courts. State prosecutors who have at least the position of a district state prosecutor appear before district courts, and also local state prosecutors, but only within the authorisations specially determined by the head of the state prosecutor's office for certain types of cases, individual cases, certain types of procedural acts or individual procedural acts. Separately for an individual procedural act, a local state prosecutor may also be authorised to appear before the district court by a competent state prosecutor.

Prosecutors who have at least the position of a senior prosecutor appear before higher courts, while solely supreme state prosecutors appear before the Supreme Court of the Republic of Slovenia.

The position of a state prosecutor is permanent.
